April in France is more than just spring blooms and sunshine – it’s the season of playful mischief and chocolatey fish! Yes, you read that right – April Fool’s Day in France is called “Poisson d’avril,” or “April Fish.” 

In many ways, French April Fool’s Day is a lot like the tradition in the United States and other countries around the world. But like many aspects of life, the French have their own unique twist! 

It’s not uncommon to see people walking around with paper fish taped to their backs on April 1 (all in good fun, of course!) or enjoying fish-shaped chocolates from their favorite chocolatier.

The Origins of French April Fool’s Day Traditions

Unwrapping the history of Poisson d’avril can be a bit complicated because there are so many different theories about how it began. 

Some historians believe the tradition is tied to the ancient Roman festival of Hilaria, which was celebrated around the start of spring. Others suggest a Christian link, referencing the fish as an early Christian symbol. The Christian season of Lent, when fish commonly replaces meat, also typically ends around the beginning of April and many people believe the “poisson” tradition stems from this symbolism.

Another popular tale points to France’s adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1564, which moved the New Year from April 1 to January 1. This change caused confusion and debate and may have turned calendar traditionalists into targets for good-natured teasing.

And of course, we can’t forget the long history of commercial fishing in France. Yet another theory suggests that April 1 marked the start of France’s fishing season. It’s believed fishermen would jokingly attach real fish (eek!) to each other’s backs as a playful celebration of the season. Thankfully, today’s pranksters prefer paper fish to the real thing!

So which theory is true? We may never truly know. But one thing is clear: Poisson d’avril continues to be a great example of French joie de vivre even today!

Today, Poisson d’avril celebrations combine art, practical jokes, and (my favorite!) chocolate. 

French children love to craft vibrant paper poissons and secretly stick them to the backs of unsuspecting friends, family, and even teachers. Discovering one taped to your back unleashes giggles and shouts of “Poisson d’avril!” throughout classrooms and homes alike.

Adults often join the fun too, exchanging chocolates and other sweets shaped like fish. You can find some really beautiful chocolate fish wrapped in colorful foil in chocolatiers and some boulangeries across France.

And just like in the United States, April Fool’s Day in France is also known for fake news stories, humorous pranks, and elaborate hoaxes cooked up by media outlets, social media, businesses and individuals.
