Homemade Mini Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

The only thing better than a fresh-baked chocolate chip cookie? A mini chocolate chip cookie you can take on the go! These pint-sized delights bring me straight back to childhood. Don’t be surprised if you find me walking through the streets of Versailles with a jar of mini cookies in my bag.

I’ve been seeing a ton of mini desserts on social media lately, and I knew I needed to get in on this trend. There’s something about making a bite-sized treat that just feels so joyful.

You can use your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe to make this mini version, but I love to use my Egg Yolk Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe because it’s so rich and delicious.

How to Make Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies

Like any great chocolate chip cookie, it all starts with quality ingredients. My egg yolk chocolate chip cookies are made with a simple list of materials you probably already have on hand:

Cookie Ingredients:

  • Unsalted Butter: This recipe uses a whole stick of butter, so make sure to use a good quality one that will provide great flavor.
  • Brown Sugar: Adding brown sugar to the recipe gives these cookies a deeper, more complex flavor.
  • Granulated Sugar: Standard granulated sugar adds an extra touch of sweetness to the dough.
  • Egg Yolks: This recipe only uses egg yolks, which adds a lovely richness to the cookies. It’s also a great way to use up extra yolks after making meringue or other egg-white treats.
  • Vanilla Extract: Use store bought or try making homemade vanilla extract with my recipe!
  • All-Purpose Flour: This recipe does not require fancy flours, just regular all-purpose! For more details on different types of flour and flour differences between the US and France, check out my guide.
  • Baking Soda: Baking soda acts as a leavening agent in chocolate chip cookies, helping them spread and brown.
  • Salt: A touch of salt helps bring out the sweetness of this recipe.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips: Make sure to get mini ones so they fit easily in the bite-sized cookies!

Making Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies: Step by Step

Making these mini treats is as simple as making a traditional chocolate chip cookie – just a bit more fun! You can read the directions below or follow along with me on Instagram!

Step 1: Beat together the butter and sugars in a stand mixer or with a hand mixer until they are light and fluffy. Add the egg yolks and vanilla extract and then mix to combine.

Step 2: Mix the dry ingredients in a separate bowl and then slowly add to the wet ingredients, mixing on low.

Step 3: Add in the chocolate chips once the rest of the dough has formed and then place the dough in the fridge to chill for about 20 minutes or in the freezer for about 10 minutes.

Step 4: Now comes the fun part – making the mini cookies! To make them mini, simply transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll it into a long, thin log shape. I find it easiest to do this in a couple batches rather than trying to do it with all the dough at once.

From there, these are as simple as the slice-and-bake cookies you can find at the grocery store! Just slice thin, dime-sized cookies out of the dough about ½ inch thick and place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

When I first made these mini chocolate chip cookies, I rolled the cookies into small balls after slicing, but you don’t have to! These come out perfectly just by slicing and baking.

Bake at 350F/175C for about 5 minutes, or until golden around the edges. Be sure to keep an eye on them, though, because the baking time can change depending on your oven, location and the size of your cookies.

Serving & Storing Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies

Once the cookies have cooled, I love to store these in cute little glass jars. Mason jars or even leftover jam jars work perfectly! Keep them in the pantry, on your counter or even in your purse for an on-the-go treat you won’t regret.

These cookies will stay fresh for about a week stored in an airtight container. But it’s highly unlikely they’ll last that long!

I also love the idea of making these to give away. Put them in a jar, tie it with a ribbon and add a handmade tag for an adorable and delicious hostess gift or teacher gift.

These mini treats can be served on their own or eaten on top of ice cream. I love the idea of adding them to a dessert tray with a variety of sweet dips, too. One of my Instagram followers even said she was tempted to eat them in a bowl with milk like cereal!

No matter how you enjoy this mini chocolate chip cookie recipe, you really can’t go wrong!

Happy baking!

I have made these a few times and they are great! I usually like a chewy chocolate chip cookie but for these i like them crisp.I find a 270g bag of just the perfect amount. So to the person in Canada (me too ) saying 330 is 10$ – just buy one bag. You wont miss the 60 additional grams.

Thank you for sharing that tip! I’m so glad you’ve made them multiple times and enjoyed them. That’s great feedback—the cookies are definitely delicious when they’re nice and crisp!

And I love the budget-friendly suggestion. It’s always helpful to hear what works from fellow bakers. Happy baking! 🍪💕

I can’t wait to try these! The dough is in the refrigerator cooling right now! I am wondering If they freeze well? Either the dough or the finished cookie?

Absolutely! Both the dough and the baked cookies freeze very well. You can freeze the dough before baking, or freeze the finished cookies in an airtight container and thaw as needed.

I hope you love them, happy baking!

These are one of the best cookies I’ve ever had! They were so easy to make! Thank you so much for the recipe! So now I’m wondering, have you ever considered how to make a sugar cookie recipe the same way? I would love to try and figure that out for those folks who don’t like chocolate! However crazy that may seem!

I enjoyed making these little cookies.
The first batch were nice and soft. My second batch was baked 3 minutes longer. They are good either way but oh so much better soft.
Thank you very much for sending this recipe.
This recipe will be my go to.

My only question, could I use my food processor to make regular size chocolate chips smaller?
Mini chocolate chips are $10.00 CANfor 290 grams.
Just trying to decrease my costs.

Thank you, Molly!

So happy to hear this! I agree—the soft, just-baked ones are absolutely the best.

And yes, you can pulse regular chocolate chips in a food processor to make them smaller. Just do short pulses so they don’t turn into dust or melt from the blade heat. It’s a great budget-friendly trick!
Thank you for sharing!

So glad you had fun making them, and I hope your friends love them just as much as you do!
