I loooove smoothies!! They are the perfect way to pack in a bunch of really good stuff into one compact easy to take with you meal. I usually start my day with a smoothie which I pour into a plastic to-go cup, toss in a straw and I’m out the door. They’re light, perfect for summer, and a great way to get in an extra serving of fruit, fiber, protein, and even veg.
An easy go to recipe for smoothies is milk + frozen fruit + a dash of cinnamon. Then go crazy with the add ins.
Here’s what I typically add to all of my smoothies:
· Throw in a handful of raw spinach or other greens. I promise you won’t taste it. Like pinky swear, cross my heart swear. My neighbor makes smoothies for her super cute 2 year old, Noelle, and one day I saw them out walking their dog in the morning. Noelle turned to her mom and asked, “why aren’t her smoothies green like mine?” I’d ran out of spinach for the week. So – spinach has the stamp of kid approval too!
· 1 tbs Protein Powder. I actually really don’t like protein powder because it adds this grittiness to the texture of the smoothie but I can’t make it to lunch without a scope. I tried about 5-7 protein powders until I found this one: NutriBiotic Plain. I can’t taste it as much as others as far as grittiness and it doesn’t add any flavor to the smoothie.
· 1 tsp Probiotic Powder. A little shot of good bacteria. If I didn’t add it to my smoothie, I’d totally forget to take it. Good bacteria = happy tummy!
– 1 – 1 1/2 tablespoon of ground flax seed. It adds a great nutty texture to the smoothie and it’s full of Omega 3 fatty acids and fiber.
Sweet Cherry Pie Smoothie
- ½ cup frozen cherries
- ¾-1 cup almond milk
- 2 dashes cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon flax seed
- 1 tsp probiotic powder
- 1 tablespoon Nutella
- 1 teaspoon almond butter
- Handful of veg!
Blend together until smooth. Adjust the milk and frozen cherries until you reach the consistency you like. Throw in a handful of spinach for some extra veg and enjoy!
