Different Types of KitchenAid Mixer Attachments
Let’s dive in and unravel the wonderful world of KitchenAid Mixer attachments, from the basics that come with the various mixer models to the must-have KitchenAid mixer attachments for home bakers looking to level up their repertoire.
Basic Attachments (Your New Baking BFFs!)
- Dough Hook: This is your go-to for anything yeasty, like bread and pizza dough. Knead away effortlessly!
- Flat Beater (Paddle): The paddle attachment is a versatile must-have for mixing cake batters, cookie dough, frostings, and even creamy mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving.
- Wire Whip (Whisk): This attachment is the secret to fluffy whipped cream, airy meringues, and light-as-a-cloud marshmallow toppings. It’s perfect for whipping air into mixtures to make them light and voluminous. In other words, joy in a bowl – yum!

Specialized KitchenAid Mixer Attachments
Beyond the standard KitchenAid attachments, there are so many other accessories you can choose from. I’ve only used the ice cream maker attachment (which I highly recommend, by the way!), but no matter what you like to create in your kitchen, there’s an attachment for you!
Just keep in mind that the attachments can be pretty bulky, so make a plan for storing everything before you go all-in on special mixer attachments.
Here are some of the most popular attachments:
- Food Grinder: Homemade burgers? Fresh sausage? This is the tool.
- Pasta Maker: Say hello to fresh pasta made easily in your kitchen.
- Citrus Juicer: Fresh-squeezed lemonade, anyone?
- Fruit & Vegetable Strainer: Jam, sauce, and puree dreams come true.
- Ice Cream Maker: Homemade ice cream that rivals your favorite gelateria. Imagine making a French ice cream cake with your own, custom ice cream – divine!
- Grain Mill: Don’t feel like navigating the differences between French vs American flour? This attachment lets you create freshly milled flour for bread like no other.
- Food Processor: Chop, slice, and shred veggies at lightning speed – perfect for making carrot cakes, my disappearing zucchini pasta and more!
- Vegetable Sheet Cutter: Fancy zucchini lasagna? This has you covered.
- Sifter & Scale: Precisely weigh and sift ingredients then dump them straight in the bowl. This would be a great one for home bakers who want to start making more complicated French pastry at home. After all, weighed ingredient measurements are one of the key differences between French and American baking.
- Flex Edge Beater: No more manual bowl-scraping – this does the scraping for you! I have this one and love it! I actually consider this KitchenAid mixer attachment to be a must-have. I wish it came standard with the mixers!

Which KitchenAid Beater Do I Use? How to Use KitchenAid Mixer Attachments
If you’re like a lot of new KitchenAid owners, then you may have started using your mixer with the whisk or paddle attachment and just continued using that for everything. Figuring out which beater to use for which recipe can be confusing!
Here’s a quick-reference cheat sheet:
- Wire Whip: Perfect for fluffy recipes that need lots of air, like whipped cream, buttercream, and meringue.
- Dough Hook: Ideal for kneading sturdy dough like breads or pizza crust.
- Flat Beater: For heavier mixes, like cakes, cookies, brownies, and more.
Now, let’s dive into more detail so you know all the KitchenAid mixer attachment uses and when to pull them out.
When to Use the Wire Whip
The wire whip attachment (aka, the whisk) is your ticket to fluffy, airy perfection. Whip up dreamy meringues, clouds of whipped cream, and even homemade marshmallows in no time. This is my go-to when I’m making macarons and chantilly cream.
- Ideal Speeds: Medium to high (4-10). It needs to be fast enough to whip air into your treats.
- Pro Tip: The whisk is not ideal for folding ingredients, as they tend to pool in the center. Just think of this like a giant hand whisk that won’t make your arm sore the next day!
When to Use the Flat Beater
For many home bakers, the flat beater is the most-used KitchenAid mixer attachment. Uses include everything from mixing cake batter to creaming butter and sugar to perfection. It’s like your trusty wooden spoon but better (and definitely faster!). I use this when making my favorite chocolate cake.
- Ideal Speeds: Low to medium (1-6) for thorough mixing with minimal mess.
- Pro Tip: Opt for the gentle “fold” speed (½ speed) to keep delicate mixtures perfectly light and airy.
- Bonus Tip: To avoid “flour explosions,” pulse the mixer on and off when first mixing in flour until it starts to incorporate, and then move it to full speed. Or use the attachment itself to manually stir the ingredients together in the bowl a bit before attaching it and mixing.
When to Use the Dough Hook
Bread bakers rejoice! The dough hook attachment effortlessly kneads yeast doughs faster and better than you could by hand (and your wrists will thank you!).
- Ideal Speeds: Always knead yeast dough at Speed 2. No faster, no slower!
- Pro Tip: KitchenAid includes a standard C-shaped dough hook with its mixers, but you can also buy a spiral dough hook for some bowl-lift stand mixer models. While I haven’t personally used the spiral hook, customer reviews say it’s more efficient and better distributes ingredients evenly when kneading.
When to Use the Flex Edge Beater
This flex edge KitchenAid mixer attachment is a personal favorite because it does double duty – mixing ingredients while scraping the bowl edges. It’s not perfect but it does significantly minimize how much manual scraping you need to do. It’s ideal for recipes where creaming together butter and sugar is key (like my Egg Yolk Chocolate Chip Cookies, for example!). No more having to turn the mixer off every couple of minutes to scrape down the sides of the bowl – this tool does it for you!
- Ideal Speeds: Low to medium (1-6). At these speeds, your recipe stays consistent, and your bowl stays clean!
When to Use the Pastry Beater
The pastry beater is another KitchenAid paddle attachment perfect for anyone learning how to make French pastry at home! The pastry beater quickly cuts butter into flour, producing perfectly flaky pastry doughs for pies, tarts, biscuits, and scones. Think of this as your new pastry chef assistant!
- Ideal Speeds: Low (2-3) to break butter down to the perfect pea or breadcrumb size.
- ProTip: Use it to mash fruits or shred meat to speed up your favorite recipes! You can also do this with the flex edge beater attachment.
Common Questions About KitchenAid Mixer Attachment Uses
Which attachment for creaming butter and sugar?
The Flat Beater or Flex Edge Beater is your creaming superstar. The flat beater comes standard with most mixers, so this is typically what I use. But if you want to pay a little more to get the Flex Edge beater and scraper, it’s definitely worth the investment!
If you’re cutting butter into flour, on the other hand, then the pastry beater is the best option.
Best attachment for cake batter?
Flat Beater for the win! It’s the perfect attachment to mix heavier batters like cakes, cookies and bars. There’s no need for anything fancy for these recipes.
Can I use a whisk for cookies?
It’s possible, but not ideal. The Flat Beater is much better for mixing thick cookie dough. With a whisk, the batter can stick or pool in the center and not get mixed together properly. Plus, if the dough is very thick it could damage the whisk attachment. If you have the Flex Edge beater with a scraper, even better!
Best attachment for frosting?
The Flat Beater or Flex Edge Beater both work beautifully for most frosting recipes. Some frostings may work better with the whisk attachment, especially if they are whipped cream-based or meant to be light and fluffy.
Can you whip egg whites with a paddle attachment?
No, not really! You need to whip air into them, so stick with the Wire Whip for anything you’d use a whisk to do by hand.
