What’s the Difference Between KitchenAid Models?

When it comes to choosing between types of KitchenAid mixers, it can feel really overwhelming! There are three primary lines and then multiple versions of each type. Thankfully, the differences between the KitchenAid models are pretty easy to understand.

The main features that vary from model to model include:

  • The size of the mixing bowl
  • The bowl action (tilt-head or bowl-lift)
  • The bowl type
  • The colors available
  • The types of accessories available

3 Types of KitchenAid Mixers

The main three types of KitchenAid stand mixers to choose from are:

KitchenAid Classic Stand Mixer

The Classic Series is perfect for those just starting out in the kitchen or on a budget. The most basic model in this series is the KitchenAid Classic, which comes with a 4.5-quart bowl.

Classic doesn’t have the strongest motor, so it’s not going to last as long as the Artisan and Pro models. But it’s great for folks who only bake occasionally and want to use it for cookies and things like whipped cream and meringue.

It comes with a beater, dough hook, and wire whisk, so you can easily manage typical baking tasks with this model.

Classic Plus KitchenAid Mixer

Another Classic Series model is the Classic Plus. It functions similarly to the Classic but has a slight power increase. Both models have 10 mixing speeds and are compatible with various attachments.

KitchenAid Classic Basic Stats:

  • Bowl Size: 4.5 qt
  • Bowl Type: Brushed stainless steel
  • Bowl Action: Tilt-head
  • Colors available: 2 (black and white)
  • Good for: Infrequent or simple baking tasks, like cookies, whipped cream and meringue

KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer

The KitchenAid Artisan line is my favorite type of KitchenAid mixer! It has a stronger motor than the Classic series and a tilt-head for easy scraping of the bowl. The bowl size is larger than the Classic line, too, and is great for at-home batches. It’s even strong enough for occasional strong doughs like bread or croissants. It’s just great overall and what I use in my own kitchen! It’s also what you’ll commonly find in bakeries when small batches are needed.

The Artisan line also offers more color options, helping you find the perfect mixer to match your kitchen aesthetic.

KitchenAid Artisan Design

While the Artisan most commonly comes with a brushed stainless steel bowl, this Artisan Design version comes with a glass bowl. These bowls are really pretty, but they can crack fairly easily. I’ve gone through three!

KitchenAid Artisan Mini

The Artisan Mini is an excellent choice for those with limited space. It has the same power as the standard Artisan but has a smaller footprint and smaller 3.5-quart bowl.

  • Bowl Size: 5 qt
  • Bowl Type: Polished stainless steel or glass
  • Bowl Action: Tilt-head
  • Colors available: 20+
  • Good for: Frequent at-home baking, occasional strong doughs

KitchenAid Pro Stand Mixer

For bakers who need (or just want!) maximum power and capacity, the KitchenAid Pro Series is the way to go.

Silver KitchenAid Pro

This type of KitchenAid mixer is good if you bake large batches and lots of strong doughs. Because of how the bowl is clasped into the machine, it’s sturdier for stronger doughs. 

However, because the bowl is larger and rounder than the Artisan mixing bowl, it can have some issues if you’re trying to make small or even regular-sized batches of whipped cream or meringue.

The lift head, while it does make the bowl more sturdy for strong doughs, can also be harder to scrape down than the tilt-head models.

KitchenAid Professional 600

This is the standard KitchenAid Pro mixer, which features a 6-quart stainless steel bowl.

The 6500 Design model features a 6-quart glass bowl and further increased power. 

KitchenAid Pro Line

The Pro Line is the pinnacle of KitchenAid’s offerings. With its 7-quart bowl and a powerful motor, it’s designed for sustained professional use. This mixer can handle even the largest batches with ease.

White KitchenAid Pro Mixer

KitchenAid Pro Stats:

  • Bowl Size: 6-7 qt
  • Bowl Type: Polished stainless steel or glass
  • Bowl Action: Bowl-lift
  • Colors available: 13+
  • Good for: Many large batches of strong doughs

What is the most popular KitchenAid Mixer?

The Artisan series of mixers is the most popular KitchenAid on the market today. This is the mixer that you’ve probably seen in commercials, catalogs and all over social media. It’s also the model I use in my at-home pastry atelier. 

It is perfect for someone who bakes (either seriously or just occasionally), making it a great choice for almost everyone. It’s powerful enough to be long-lasting and allow you to do more things with it, and it’s also calibrated to work with the recipe sizes that most people make at home.

It also comes in more than 20 colors, so you’ll be able to find the perfect mixer for your style.

What is the lifespan of a KitchenAid mixer?

While KitchenAid mixers are definitely an investment, they’re a good one! These mixers are generally expected to last 10-15 years. And if you take good care of yours and use it properly, it can last even longer. That being said, the earlier models were made so well that my little sister still uses my grandmother’s mixer!

What distinguishes the KitchenAid Professional series from the Artisan and Classic lines?

The KitchenAid Professional series features more powerful motors compared to the Artisan and Classic lines, enabling them to handle heavier mixtures and larger capacities. The Professional mixers have bowl-lift designs, which means the bowl is raised to meet the mixer head, while the Artisan and Classic models have a tilt-head mechanism.

Which attachments are compatible with a KitchenAid mixer?

KitchenAid mixers have a multi-purpose attachment hub, allowing for a wide range of attachments to be fitted. These can make your mixer even more versatile by turning it into a food processor, ice cream maker, pasta maker, vegetable spiralizer and more. 

The Verdict: Which KitchenAid Mixer Should I Buy?

Choosing the best KitchenAid mixer is such a personal decision…but of course, I have my favorite! As a pro pastry chef, my preference is for an Artisan tilt-head mixer. I think it’s easier to scrape and typically better for at-home-sized batches of your favorite baked goods.

In pastry shop, you usually see the tilt-head style mixers for small batches, meringues and similar jobs. The large, bowl-light style mixers are used for stronger doughs.
